Grammy Awards: Adele wins 6 awards, artists pay tribute to Whitney Houston

The Grammy Awards, the biggest night of the year for the music industry, was less celebratory this year as artists paid tribute to the late music and film star Whitney Houston who passed away the night before. Houston, the most awarded female artist of all time, had been nominated for 26 Grammys during her music career, winning 6.

Speaking of six Grammy Awards, new star Adele came in to a night with six nominations and left with clean sweep, winning all six Grammys. She won the most important awards of the night: Best Song and Best record of the year for “Rolling in the Deep,” and Best Album of the year for “21.” In her first public performance since canceling a tour and having surgery on her vocal cords, she wowed the audience with her song “Rolling in the Deep.”

The Grammy Awards producers tweaked the telecast at the last might and added a tribute to Whitney Houston. “We’ve had a death in our family,” host LL Cool J said. He offered “a prayer for a woman we loved, for a fallen sister.” Other artists also paid respect to the music icon. “There’s a little bit of a dark cloud… a lot of people are heartbroken,” country singer Miranda Lambert said, adding “we can let music heal us.”

In other highlights of the night, Katy Perry performed her hit track “ET” with a twist, going into her new song, seemingly aiming at her ex-husband Russel Brand, singing “he can keep his diamond ring.”

Other big winners of the night included the Foo Fighters, Cee Lo Green, Kanye West, and the Civil Wars. A Grammy for the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance also went to late singer Amy Winehouse, along with veteran music figure Tony Bennet for their duo “Body and Soul.”
