“A Separation” nominated for two Oscars

Followed by its Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film, “A Separation” is nominated for not one but two Oscars in the 84th Academy Awards. Aside from a nod in the Best Foreign Language Film category, “A Separation” is nominated for the Original Screenplay for writer-director Asghar Farhadi.
This second nod for “A Separation” was a surprise for most observers, mostly because foreign-language films are rarely nominated for screenplay or directing. Last time a foreign film was named a nominee in this category was 2007′s “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.”
Other nominees for the Best Screenplay Oscar are “The Artist,” “Bridesmaids,” “Margin Call” and “Midnight in Paris” by Woody Allen. “A Separation” will compete with “Bullhead” (Belgium), “Monsieur Lazhar” (Canada), “Footnote” (Israel) and “In Darkness” (Poland) for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.
This is the first Academy Award nomination for Asghar Farhadi and a second for Iran. Majid Majidi‘s “Children of Heaven” was nominated in 1998, but eventually lost to the Italian film “Life Is Beautiful” by Roberto Benigni.
